Read: Luke 10:38-42 - “Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord's feet, listening to His word. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, ‘Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.’ But the Lord answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.’”

Reflect:

There is a clear difference in the way that Mary and Martha approached Jesus in Luke 10. Mary was focused on sitting at the feet of Jesus while Martha was focused on her activity for Jesus. Jesus' response in this passage clarifies for us what matters most in His relationship with His followers.

The Christian life is not about what we can do FOR God. It is not about how many church services we attend, how many hours we serve, or how many people we help. It is about an intimate, growing relationship with God. That relationship can only be deepened through our personal and daily pursuit of the presence of God through what we call God Time (time spent daily alone in fellowship with God). Jesus said, "Abide in Me." He called His disciples to first come and be with Him before they were to go out from Him to serve. Our best activity for God will flow out of our intimacy with God. Jesus commended Mary for wanting to simply sit at His feet and spend time with Him.

As you seek to experience more of God in your personal life, you must embrace God's invitation to know Him through spending time with Him. There is no more important aspect of the Christian life than regular time set apart to simply be with Him. Everything in your life will flow out of this. When something is important to us, we make time for it. If hearing from God is a priority, then you will carve out unhurried time to sit before Him and listen.

Prayer for the Day:

Heavenly Father, I recognize that You have called me to an intimate love relationship with You before anything else. I desire to know You through spending time simply beholding You. I desire more of You in my life today.
